RCL has enjoyed a reputation for quality typesetting for many years, and is a preferred typesetter for a number of the leading UK publishers. Customer care and administration are all based at Bungay, as are the initial preparation of typesetting specifications and provision of artwork. Production operations may then move offshore, where data capture/data editing is carried out. RCL use its own bespoke typesetting system/Quark/InDesign, thus enabling page make-up to be carried out at either site following the same strict criteria. For the initial typesetting stage, quality control, proofing and despatch are all carried out at Bungay and, for ease of communication and speed, all further stages through to finalising are generally carried out there. This routine ensures that our own traditionally high standards are monitored and maintained throughout the entire process ensuring that final responsibility rests with RCL. All Customer contact is managed at RCL in Bungay by experienced and knowledgeable staff. We take pride in our ability to liaise with Customers on enquiries, schedules, typography, style and general job queries – our aim is to make typesetting as trouble-free as possible for each and every Customer. If Technical or Production advice is required, the option of direct contact with appropriate personnel will always be given, thus ensuring the shortest and most effective route. It is difficult not to be aware of the competitive attitudes of non-UK typesetters. However, it has also been noted that offshore price competitiveness can come with an additional cost – that of communication problems. RCL provides price competitiveness without the despatch, transmission and communication problems which are at times inherent when dealing offshore. Technical expertise and support RCL owes a great deal to the ability and experience of Malcolm Balls (Technical Director), who has been involved in the development of typesetting for almost thirty years. Malcolm played a prime role in the development of the first commercially operable computerised system in the UK. Throughout the various systems he has brought into operation, Malcolm has retained the theme of “typesetting for typesetters”, with Customers’ requirements allied to good typographical standards being his guide. Led by Malcolm Balls, RCL has its own technical development and support team with experience and expertise in all the technical offshoots of “typesetting”.
